Region’s businesses recovering with help from new advisor

South Kootenay businesses recovering from an environment that had them redesigning their services and business model now have a new yet familiar consultant to call upon.

The Trail & District Chamber of Commerce’s Business Recovery Advisor Mitch Marino has had no shortage of work since he was appointed to the role in his hometown this past spring.

“The times right now are dynamic; the business landscape and our societal landscape are constantly shifting and changing and it can feel quite overwhelming,” says Marino. “I think at some point in the past 20 months or so, everyone has felt at least a little that way. It’s always good to have some additional support someone there to help you find your way and to take some of the load off.”

Funded by the Province’s Rural Business and Community Recovery Program and managed by the Economic Trust of the Southern Interior (ETSI-BC), this 10-month position is one of 36 in the Interior creating a network of professional advisors working directly with economic or business development organizations. Any business in the South Kootenay region Chamber member or otherwise is welcome to take advantage of the advisory services at no cost.

After initial contact, Marino connects with business leaders, hears their challenges, and provides advice, strategies, and actionable steps to address their needs. He also makes referrals, holds them accountable, and tracks common emerging themes, taking cues from the business community and leveraging this data for future opportunities, like community workshops.

“I want people to know that I’m someone they can talk to, trust, and rely on,” he adds. “Rather than giving them canned solutions, I listen to what they have to say, consider their specific position, and then provide them with personalized service.”

Marino was raised in Trail but left the area to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Finance from the University of Alberta. He has 10 years of professional experience working as a management consultant in various sectors, including government, not-for-profit, corporate, and small business. To connect with Mitch, send him an email or book a time in his calendar.

Did someone say free appetizer?

The aromatic French cuisine at The Velvet has her fixated on the main course before she’s even swirled and sipped the pinot noir. She orders a homemade pappardelle pasta with mushrooms, confit tomato, and kale in a creamy sauce. He points to the pan-seared salmon with fingerling potatoes, chorizo, and leeks in a romesco sauce finished with citrus and a squid ink crisp.

With their Member 2 Member (M2M) card in hand, they add a complimentary Monashee Green Salad grilled avocado, crumbled feta cheese, and toasted seeds   to prep their palette prior to their mains arriving.

During both lunch and dinner hours, Chamber members are eligible to receive a free appetizer with the purchase of two or more entrees at The Josie Hotel‘s restaurant. The Chamber’s M2M Benefit Program encourages members to support one another through special offers: some delicious, all economical.

M2M cards are mailed out at the beginning of each year, giving members access to local perks at participating businesses year-round. Deals especially attractive to businesses, such as discounts on fuel, shipping, financial services, and advertising, like a $35 ad on this Chamber page in the Trail Times, are also available.

“Member 2 Member is a fun way for Chamber businesses to think and support local, which is how we do business,” explains Executive Director Erika Krest. “We have so many wonderful businesses in the region, and this is but one of the Chamber initiatives that encourages our people to spend their hard-earned money where they make it.”
